Out of the Darkness Walk
|

On Sunday, October 4th, St. Joseph’s had a unique opportunity to participate in a special event, the Out of the Darkness
Community Walk. This scenic walk took place in more than 200 communities across the country this fall, with the local
participants promenading around Mirror Lake in Lake Placid.
Proceeds went to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide
Prevention, to fund research, education, survivor and awareness programs — both to prevent suicide and to assist those
affected by suicide. 29 residents and 11 staff members were able to participate this year, marching strong against the
potentially fatal illness of depression, which can so often go hand-in-hand with addiction. It was an impressive event
with singing by a local high school choir, a declaration by the mayor of Lake Placid, and a speech by Senator Betty Little
—not to mention some powerfully moving talks by suicide survivors.
The residents who participated were enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to join in this community event.
We were blessed with good weather, camaraderie, and a great tailgate picnic to top off this amazing day!
