2010 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is the longest-running event of its kind in the Eastern U.S. The Carnival began as a
one-day event to break the monotony of the long Adirondack winter and has grown into a ten-day festival that includes
sports, dances, performances, two parades and fireworks above the Ice Palace.
This year, the Carnival’s 113th, St. Joseph’s residents and visitors celebrated the festival through the theme of
“Adirondack Cowboys”.
And as they do each year, St. Joseph’s residents constructed a most imaginative float and marched with members of
the staff alongside their entry in the highlight of the festival, Saturday’s Carnival parade.
Preparation for the parade began weeks in advance under the direction of the Personal Adjustment Transition staff – Dean Ellis, Tony Callaghan,
Katie Tyler, Lisa Redmond and Lauren Trostle, Barb Catalano from the Finance Department and Charlie Fitzpatrick and the
other Maintenance Department staff.

In recognition of the residents’and St. Joseph's staff efforts, the judging committee, as they did
in 2009, awarded St. Joseph’s the first-place trophy in the Business Walking category.
Over a dozen residents assisted with the float’s construction, from design to painting including many hours in the
building of the float. The residents believed that, “This was a great experience. We all bonded together, which was
nice because in the beginning we all had our individual preferences. It was also really great to
get out in the community to march in the parade.”
Regarding the first-place trophy, one of our residents exclaimed, “It’s wonderful! We all worked together and it paid off.”

Where would we be without Kelly's Chuck Wagon bringing in the food!
